A\u00a0tughra<\/b>\u00a0(Ottoman Turkish:\u00a0\u0637\u063a\u0631\u0627<\/span>,\u00a0romanized:\u00a0<\/small>\u1e6du\u0121r\u0101<\/i><\/span>;\u00a0Turkish:\u00a0tu\u011fra<\/i>) is a\u00a0calligraphic\u00a0monogram,\u00a0seal\u00a0or\u00a0signature\u00a0of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and correspondence. Inspired by the\u00a0tamgha<\/a>, it was also carved on his seal and stamped on the coins minted during his reign. Very elaborate decorated versions were created for important documents that were also works of art in the tradition of\u00a0Ottoman illumination<\/a>, such as the example of\u00a0Suleiman the Magnificent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tughra was designed at the beginning of the sultan’s reign and drawn by the court\u00a0calligrapher\u00a0or\u00a0ni\u015fanc\u0131<\/i>\u00a0on written documents. The first tughra examples are from the 14th century.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Tughras served a purpose similar to the\u00a0cartouche<\/a>\u00a0in ancient Egypt or the\u00a0Royal Cypher<\/a>\u00a0of British monarchs. Every Ottoman sultan had his own individual tughra.<\/p>\n
